- How do you clean grout and keep it clean?
Clean cement grout with a pH-neutral cleaner like diluted dish soap and a white nylon pad. Skip vinegar and bleach, rinse, dry, and keep it sealed.
- How do you clean a range hood filter?
Clean metal range hood filters monthly to every 6 months in hot soapy water or the dishwasher. Charcoal filters can't be washed; replace them.

- How do you find and seal air leaks in your house?
Find air leaks in the attic, rim joist, and around windows, then seal with caulk or foam. EPA estimates an average 15% savings on heating and cooling.
- How do you fix a leaky faucet?
Shut off the water, identify the faucet type, and replace the worn cartridge, seats and springs, or washer. A drip a second wastes ~2,779 gal a year.

Fix a squeaky door hinge by pulling one pin at a time, cleaning off rust with steel wool, coating it with white lithium grease, and tapping it back in.

Fruit flies go from egg to adult in about 8 to 10 days. Find and remove the breeding source first, then trap the adults with cider vinegar and dish soap.
- Why won't my GFCI outlet reset?
A GFCI that won't reset usually has no power, a real ground fault, or has failed. Check the breaker and upstream GFCIs, then unplug everything.
- How do you hang heavy things on drywall?
For heavy items, screw into a stud or use a heavy-duty anchor rated well above the load. Adhesive strips like Command Large are rated for about 15-16 lb.
- Do heat pumps work in cold weather?
Yes. ENERGY STAR's cold-climate criterion requires COP ≥1.75 at 5°F. At 18¢/kWh, COP 3 heat costs 6¢ per kWh vs 18¢ for heat strips.
- Is a heated blanket cheaper than a space heater?
Yes. A 150 W heated blanket costs about 22 cents a night at 18¢/kWh, versus $2.16 for a 1,500 W space heater on high, about one-tenth.
- How many watts does a refrigerator use?
A fridge draws about 100 to 250 W while running but averages 40 to 80 W, or 1 to 2 kWh a day. Find your model's kWh, monthly cost and start-up watts.
- How often should you change your HVAC filter? (MERV 8 vs. 13)
Check your HVAC filter monthly and change it at least every 3 months. EPA suggests MERV 13 or the highest rating your system can handle.

Turn the heat off, let it cool, open the bleed valve about half a turn until water flows, close it, then check boiler pressure against its label.
