Short answer: About 850 Wh of a 1,000Wh power station's capacity reaches devices through its AC outlets. That runs a 20 W Wi-Fi router for about 40 hours, a modern full-size fridge for about 14 to 17 hours, a 60 W laptop for about 14 hours, and a 1,500 W space heater for only about 30 minutes, if the unit can supply that much power at all.

The formula

Runtime in hours = usable watt-hours ÷ device watts

A power station’s rating is the energy stored in its battery. Some is lost turning battery power into 120-volt outlet power in the inverter, typically 10 to 15%. So for devices plugged into the AC outlets, plan on about 850 Wh usable from a 1,000Wh unit.

Devices charged from the USB-C or 12 V ports skip the inverter and lose less, so they get a little more.

Small loads drain more than the math suggests. The inverter uses some power just to stay on, often in the range of 10 to 20 W on mid-size units. Running a 20 W router alone through the AC outlet can therefore cut its runtime by a third or more. Power small devices from the 12 V or USB ports when you can.

Example: a 50 W fan runs about 850 ÷ 50 = 17 hours.

Runtime table for a 1,000Wh power station

Based on 850 Wh usable through the AC outlets. Watts are typical values; check your device’s label for its real number.

Device Typical watts Runtime on 1,000Wh
LED light bulb 9 W about 94 hours
Wi-Fi router and modem 20 W up to about 42 hours (less with inverter idle draw)
CPAP, humidifier and heated tube off 30 to 60 W about 14 to 28 hours
Box fan or ceiling fan 50 W about 17 hours
Laptop 60 W about 14 hours
Full-size refrigerator 1.2 to 1.5 kWh a day about 14 to 17 hours
Chest freezer about 0.8 kWh a day about 25 hours
TV (55-inch LED) 100 W about 8.5 hours
Electric blanket 100 W on high about 8.5 hours
Sump pump (1/3 hp) 800 W while pumping about 1 hour of pumping time
Coffee maker 800 W about 1 hour of brewing
Microwave (1,000 W cooking power) about 1,500 W from the outlet about 30 minutes, if the unit can supply 1,500 W
Space heater 1,500 W about 30 minutes, if the unit can supply 1,500 W
Window AC (small) about 500 to 1,000 W about 50 minutes to 1.7 hours

Phones: a typical phone battery holds roughly 15 Wh. Allowing for charging losses, a 1,000Wh station can refill one about 50 times over USB.

Laptops: a typical laptop battery holds 50 to 100 Wh, so roughly 8 to 17 full charges.

Fridges are the most common reason people buy one

A fridge does not draw power all the time. Its compressor cycles on and off, so the right number is its daily energy, not its running watts. A modern full-size fridge typically uses 1 to 2 kWh a day. One ENERGY STAR-certified side-by-side model is rated at 524 kWh a year, or about 1.4 kWh a day, which a 1,000Wh station covers for about 14 hours.

Two things to check before counting on it:

  1. Surge rating. The compressor needs a short burst of power to start, often several times its running watts (a common rule of thumb for motors is about three times). Continuous and surge ratings vary widely between 1,000Wh models, so check the spec sheet of yours.
  2. Food safety. FoodSafety.gov says a closed fridge keeps food safe for about 4 hours without power, so you can run it in shifts, for example a few hours on and a few hours off, to stretch the battery. Keep an appliance thermometer inside; perishables held above 40°F for more than 2 hours should generally be thrown out.

More detail: how many watts does a refrigerator use.

A realistic outage day on 1,000Wh

Device Watts Hours Wh
Refrigerator daily figure 24 1,200
Wi-Fi router and modem 20 24 480
4 LED bulbs 36 5 180
Total 1,860

That is more than twice the 850 Wh available. A 1,000Wh station covers this list for roughly 11 hours, so you would need to trim: run the router only part of the day, run the fridge in shifts, or recharge from solar. For a full day of this list, plan on about 2,200 Wh of capacity. Our power station size calculator works this out for any list.

What a 1,000Wh power station cannot run

How to make the battery last longer

  1. Use DC ports when you can. Charging phones and laptops over USB-C avoids inverter losses.
  2. Turn off the AC inverter when nothing needs it. Left on with no load, it still uses a small amount of power.
  3. Turn off heat features. A CPAP’s heated humidifier, for example, can use more power than the pump itself.
  4. Keep it warm. Lithium batteries deliver less when cold, and many will not charge below freezing. Keep the unit indoors.
  5. Recharge from solar. A 200 W panel with 4 peak sun hours adds roughly 200 × 4 × 0.75 = 600 Wh, less in winter or shade.

How long does it take to recharge?

Recharge time = capacity ÷ charging watts, plus a little for losses. Some current 1,000Wh units fast-charge from a wall outlet in about an hour, while others take several hours; the spec sheet lists the maximum AC charging watts. From solar, it depends on panel watts, peak sun hours and the station’s maximum solar input: two 200 W panels might refill one in roughly 3 to 4 peak sun hours if the station accepts 400 W of solar, while a single 100 W panel needs about 13 peak sun hours, or two to three sunny days.

1,000Wh vs. 1,000W: not the same thing

Watt-hours (Wh) measure how much energy the battery holds. Watts (W) measure how much power it can deliver at once. A unit rated 1,000Wh might deliver 1,000 W, 1,800 W or more, depending on its inverter. Check both numbers on the spec sheet.

Power stations produce no exhaust, so unlike gas generators they can be used indoors. Follow the maker’s instructions and keep them dry and ventilated.

Quick answers

Can a 1,000Wh power station run a refrigerator? Yes, a modern full-size fridge for about 14 to 17 hours, if the station’s surge rating can start the compressor.

Can a 1,000Wh power station run a CPAP? Usually. With the humidifier and heated tube off, a CPAP drawing 30 to 60 W runs for roughly two to three and a half 8-hour nights. If you rely on a CPAP for a medical condition, ask your doctor or equipment supplier about a backup plan. Check the CPAP maker’s guidance.

Can a 1,000Wh power station run a space heater? Only briefly. A 1,500 W heater would empty it in about half an hour, and many 1,000Wh units cannot supply 1,500 W.

How many times can a 1,000Wh power station charge a phone? About 50 times, assuming a roughly 15 Wh phone battery charged over USB.

Is 1,000Wh enough for a power outage? For phones, lights, Wi-Fi and a few hours of the fridge, yes. To keep a fridge running for a full day along with other essentials, look at 2,000Wh or more.
