How do you hang heavy things on drywall?

Short answer: Drive screws into a wood stud whenever you can. Where no stud lines up, use a heavy-duty toggle-style anchor whose package rating is well above the item's weight. Keep adhesive strips for light frames; 3M rates four pairs of Command Large strips at about 15-16 lb. Mount TVs to studs per the mount maker's instructions.

What is the strongest way to hang something on drywall?

A screw driven into a wood stud is the most secure option. Drywall is a gypsum panel. It crumbles under concentrated load, so anything heavy should transfer its weight to the framing behind it.

Between studs, use a hollow-wall anchor whose package rating is well above the item’s weight. Makers set ratings under test conditions; wall thickness, wall condition and installation all affect real-world holding.

Which drywall anchor should I use?

Fastener How it holds Typical use Where to find the rating
Screw into stud Threads bite into solid wood framing Shelves, TV mounts, cabinets, mirrors Mount or hardware instructions
Toggle bolt (spring or strap type) A metal bar opens behind the drywall and spreads the load Heavier items between studs Toggle package or maker’s spec sheet
Self-drilling (threaded) anchor Coarse threads cut into the gypsum Medium frames, small shelves Anchor package
Plastic expansion anchor Sleeve expands inside the hole Light items Anchor package
Adhesive strips Adhesive bonds to the paint surface Light frames on smooth walls Product page

We have not tested these fasteners. Use the rating for your exact anchor and drywall thickness; a rating for one thickness does not carry over to another.

How much do Command strips hold?

3M’s product page says four pairs of Command Large Picture Hanging Strips hold 16 pounds. Its specification table lists 15 lb (7 kg). Use the lower 15 lb figure to be safe.

3M also says not to use the strips:

It recommends cleaning the wall with rubbing alcohol first, waiting seven days after painting, and using the strips between 50°F and 105°F. The page describes them for smooth surfaces.

How do I find a stud?

Slide an electronic stud finder slowly across the wall and mark both edges of each stud. Confirm with a small finish nail at the mark; you should hit solid wood. Check each stud with the finder rather than assuming the spacing.

How do I hang a TV on drywall?

Follow the wall mount maker’s instructions exactly. They specify the fasteners, number of studs, and the weight and screen size supported. Many mounts are designed to bolt into studs, not drywall alone. Compare the mount’s rating with the TV weight in your TV manual.

Check for wires and pipes first

Electrical cables and plumbing often run inside walls. Avoid drilling directly above or below outlets and switches, or behind sinks and toilets. Some stud finders include an AC voltage detection mode; if yours does, use it before drilling. If you hit a wire or pipe, stop. Turn off the circuit or water and call a licensed electrician or plumber.

Why should I anchor TVs and furniture to the wall?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urges adults to anchor TVs and furniture, such as bookcases and dressers, to the wall. In a February 2024 release, CPSC reported:

Statistic Figure
Estimated injuries per year from furniture, TV and appliance tip-overs About 17,800
Share of those injuries to children under 18 44%
How often a child is treated in an ER for a tip-over Every 53 minutes
Tip-over deaths, 2013 through July 2023 217
Share of those deaths involving a TV 47%

CPSC’s Anchor It! site lists these basic steps for an anchoring kit:

  1. Attach one bracket to the wall.
  2. Move the furniture close to the wall.
  3. Attach the other bracket or plate to the furniture or TV.
  4. Connect the strap to both brackets.
  5. Tighten the strap, then tug on it to check it is secure.

If you cannot anchor a TV, CPSC advises placing it on a sturdy, low base, pushed as far back as possible, with cords out of reach. Keep toys and remotes where children won’t climb to get them.

Quick answers

Can drywall hold a TV without studs? Only if the mount maker says so. Many mounts call for studs. Follow the mount maker’s instructions and weight limit.

How much weight can a drywall anchor hold? It depends on the anchor type, size, and drywall thickness. Use the maker’s rating for your exact wall, and pick one well above your load.

Are Command strips strong enough for a mirror? 3M rates four pairs of Large strips at about 15-16 lb and says not to hang valuable items or hang anything over beds. Heavier mirrors need studs or toggles.

Do I need to anchor a dresser to the wall? Yes. CPSC recommends anchoring dressers, bookcases and TVs; children account for 44% of tip-over injuries.
