Short answer: Yes. A battery-powered video doorbell needs no doorbell wiring. You mount it, connect it to Wi-Fi, and recharge it by USB. Ring says a full charge can take up to 10 hours. Wired models need a doorbell transformer; Ring lists 8 to 24 VAC for its battery doorbells and up to 16 to 24 VAC for some wired models. Google says its battery Nest Doorbell won't charge below 32°F.

Do you need wiring for a video doorbell?

No, if you buy a battery-powered model. These doorbells run on a built-in or removable rechargeable battery. You mount the unit, pair it with the maker’s app, and join it to your Wi-Fi.

Ring, Google Nest, and other brands sell battery models. Some models are wired-only, so check the product page.

The tradeoff is upkeep. You have to take the battery or the doorbell down and recharge it on a schedule.

How long does a doorbell battery take to charge?

Ring’s support page says a doorbell battery “can take up to 10 hours to fully charge.” It also says the charger needs a minimum output of 1 amp.

Item What Ring states
Full charge time Up to 10 hours
Minimum charger output 1 amp
Built-in battery Charge by USB with the included cable
Removable battery Charge until only the green light stays lit

Battery life between charges depends on how many motion events, live views, and rings the doorbell handles. Treat any “months per charge” claim as a best case.

For Quick Release battery models, Ring suggests a spare battery to avoid downtime while one charges. You swap batteries and charge the spare indoors.

Does cold weather affect video doorbell batteries?

Yes. Google’s support guidance, as reported by 9to5Google in 2022, says its battery Nest Doorbell can still run but will not charge between -4°F (-20°C) and 32°F (0°C). The battery may also drain faster than usual. Charging resumes only once the battery warms to 32°F or above.

Google also said that near -4°F, the battery “may have less than half the life that it has in warm weather.”

Battery temperature Runs? Charges?
32°F (0°C) and above Yes Yes
-4°F to 32°F (-20°C to 0°C) Yes No
Near -4°F (-20°C) Yes, but may last less than half as long No

These figures apply to Google’s own products. Lithium-ion batteries in other brands are also cold-sensitive, so check your model’s specs. In cold climates, a removable battery you can charge indoors is easier to live with.

What do wired video doorbells need?

A wired doorbell takes power from a low-voltage doorbell transformer. Ring’s US hardwiring guide lists different ranges by model:

Ring model group Transformer Ring lists
Battery doorbells, Video Doorbell Elite 8 to 24 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 5 to 40 VA
Video Doorbell Wired 10 to 24 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 8 to 40 VA
Video Doorbell Plus, Pro, Wired Doorbell 2K Plus, Wired Doorbell 4K Pro 16 to 24 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 10 to 40 VA

An older 8 or 10 VAC chime transformer may be too weak for higher-end wired models. Other brands set their own ranges. Read the exact requirement for your model before you buy. Ring warns that “using incompatible power sources can damage your device and cause electric shock.”

Many battery doorbells can also be hardwired. Ring says connecting a battery doorbell to existing wiring or a transformer provides a trickle charge to the battery. Some older Ring models (Video Doorbell 2 and 1st Gen) need a wirewound resistor for this.

If your home has no doorbell wiring at all, adding a transformer and new wire is a bigger job. The transformer connects to your home’s 120-volt wiring, so hire a licensed electrician. Ring notes that permits or professional installation may be required in some areas.

Safety: Turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before touching any doorbell wiring. Ring tells you to do this before you begin installation.

Can renters install a video doorbell?

Often, yes. A battery model avoids any change to the home’s wiring. The usual issue is mounting.

Standard mounts screw into the door frame or siding. Renters can look for no-drill mounts that fit their exact model.

Ask your landlord before you drill or attach anything to the building. Also check whether your lease or local rules limit cameras that view shared hallways.

Will my Wi-Fi reach the front door?

A video doorbell needs solid Wi-Fi at the door. Exterior walls, brick, and metal doors weaken the signal, causing slow live view and late alerts.

Test first: run a speed test on your phone at the door. If the signal is weak, move the router or add coverage. See where to place your Wi-Fi router and mesh Wi-Fi vs. extender.

Quick answers

Can I put a Ring doorbell where there is no doorbell? Yes. A battery-powered Ring doorbell runs without wiring. You just need a mounting spot and Wi-Fi at the door.

How long does it take to charge a video doorbell battery? Ring says up to 10 hours for a full charge, using a charger that outputs at least 1 amp.

Why won’t my video doorbell charge in winter? Rechargeable batteries charge poorly in the cold. Google says its battery Nest Doorbell does not charge between -4°F and 32°F.

What voltage does a wired video doorbell need? It depends on the model. Ring lists 8 to 24 VAC for its battery doorbells and 16 to 24 VAC (10 to 40 VA) for models like the Video Doorbell Pro.

Can I hardwire a battery doorbell to keep it charged? Many models allow it. Ring says hardwiring gives the battery a trickle charge. Turn off the breaker first.
