Short answer: Overseed thin tall fescue lawns in September, per K-State. Mow to 1 to 1.5 inches and bag clippings. Slit-seed, or core aerate with 3 to 4 passes. Sow about half the new-lawn rate: 3 to 4 lb tall fescue or 1 to 1.5 lb bluegrass per 1,000 sq ft. Water lightly and often. Mow at 3 to 4 inches tall.

Why is fall the best time to overseed?

Fall overseeding is for cool-season lawns, mainly tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. Cooler weather favors these grasses, and Kansas State University (K-State) recommends fall as the time to thicken tall fescue lawns that thinned over the summer.

When should you overseed in fall?

K-State says tall fescue lawns that thinned over the summer can be thickened by overseeding during September.

How to overseed a lawn, step by step

1. Mow short and remove clippings

Mow to 1 to 1.5 inches and bag the clippings. This improves seed-to-soil contact and lets light reach the seedlings.

2. Check and reduce thatch

Thatch depth What K-State recommends
1/4 inch or less Ready to overseed
1/4 to 3/4 inch Power rake to reduce it first
3/4 inch or more Remove with a sod cutter and start over

3. Open the soil so seed touches it

Seed must land in soil, not on top of grass. K-State lists three ways:

4. Spread the right amount of seed

Overseeding uses about half the new-lawn rate, per K-State. (It gives the same half rate for shady areas.)

Grass New lawn (lb per 1,000 sq ft) Overseeding (lb per 1,000 sq ft)
Tall fescue 6 to 8 3 to 4
Kentucky bluegrass 2 to 3 1 to 1.5

Formula: overseeding rate = new-lawn rate ÷ 2. For a 5,000 sq ft fescue lawn: 5 × 3 to 4 lb = 15 to 20 lb of seed.

More is not better. K-State warns that too much seed makes a lawn more prone to disease and stress damage. Use the grass seed calculator to size your purchase.

5. Fertilize at seeding

Apply fertilizer at the rate a soil test recommends. Without a test, K-State says to use a starter fertilizer at the bag rate. For the rest of the year’s schedule, see when to fertilize your lawn.

6. Keep the top layer moist

Water lightly and often. The goal is soil that stays constantly moist but never waterlogged.

Conditions Watering (K-State)
Hot days May need watering 3 times a day
As seedlings establish Cut back gradually to about once a week if no rain

7. Wait to mow, and limit traffic

Start mowing when seedlings reach 3 to 4 inches tall. Until then, keep feet, mowers, and pets off the area.

What should you avoid when overseeding?

Pre-emergent crabgrass herbicides. These products stop seeds from germinating, including grass seed. Purdue Extension says not to use them on new seedlings or before seeding an area. UGA Extension notes they have long residual activity. Most product labels warn against use on newly seeded lawns. If you applied one this year, read its label for the reseeding interval before you seed.

Foot traffic. K-State advises limiting foot, mower, and pet traffic until seedlings are ready for their first mowing.

Heavy leaf cover. As a rule of thumb, don’t let fallen leaves mat over new seedlings, since seedlings need light. See rake or mulch leaves for how to handle them.

Can you overseed a warm-season lawn in fall?

Not with this approach. Warm-season grasses such as bermudagrass go dormant and turn brown after frost, per Clemson. The fall thickening K-State describes applies to cool-season grasses.

In the South, “overseeding” usually means sowing ryegrass over dormant bermudagrass for winter color. Clemson Extension says this is generally not recommended for home lawns. If you do it, use only bermudagrass. Clemson does not endorse overseeding centipede, zoysia, or St. Augustine, because the extra water, fertilizer, and shade can badly harm them in spring.

Clemson suggests sowing about 30 days before first frost, when highs are near 70°F and lows stay above 50°F.

Quick answers

Can I just throw grass seed on my lawn? Seed needs contact with soil. K-State recommends mowing short, then slit seeding, verticutting, or core aerating before you spread seed.

How much seed do I need to overseed? About half the new-lawn rate. That’s roughly 3 to 4 lb of tall fescue or 1 to 1.5 lb of Kentucky bluegrass per 1,000 sq ft.

When can I mow after overseeding? When the new grass reaches 3 to 4 inches tall, per K-State.

Can I put down crabgrass preventer and seed at the same time? Generally no. Pre-emergent herbicides block grass seed too. Purdue advises against using them before seeding, so check the product label.

Should I overseed bermudagrass in fall? Clemson generally does not recommend it for home lawns. If you want winter color, ryegrass on bermudagrass is the only option it supports.
