How do I get rid of moles in my yard?

Short answer: University extension services rate trapping as the most practical way to remove moles. Confirm it is a mole (raised ridges, round volcano-shaped mounds), press tunnels down, and set a harpoon, scissor-jaw or choker trap where they are rebuilt within 24 hours. Move traps after 2-3 days without a catch. Castor oil shows only minor effect, and gum and vibrating devices are unproven.

Is it a mole, a vole or a gopher?

Identify the animal first. Control methods differ, and a mole trap will not fix vole or gopher damage. The Internet Center for Wildlife Damage Management (ICWDM) stresses this step.

Sign Mole Pocket gopher Vole
Surface ridges Yes, raised ridges from shallow feeding tunnels Generally no No; grass clipped into above-ground runways
Mound shape Round, volcano-shaped in profile Crescent or horseshoe-shaped No mounds
Hole / plug Plug in the center, often not obvious Plugged hole off to one side Small open holes may connect the runways

Mound and ridge details come from UC IPM’s pocket gopher notes. Animal features and vole runways come from Penn State Extension.

What do moles eat, and will grub control get rid of them?

Moles eat mostly earthworms and insects, including grubs. University of Missouri Extension says they also take spiders and snail larvae. They have big appetites and may eat a large share of their body weight each day.

Killing grubs often does not solve the problem. ICWDM notes that “a lawn can be free of grubs and still have moles.” Earthworms remain a food source. With fewer insects, moles may dig even more while searching for food. Penn State also warns that grub insecticides can harm birds and other wildlife.

If you treat grubs, do it for the lawn’s sake, not as mole control. See when to fertilize your lawn for broader lawn care timing.

How do I find an active mole tunnel?

Penn State Extension describes a simple test:

  1. Press down sections of several tunnels with your foot.
  2. Mark each spot.
  3. Recheck in 24 hours.
  4. Tunnels that have been pushed back up are active.

Pick straight runways with fresh activity. Avoid twisting surface ridges. Do not set traps on top of mounds.

What is the most effective way to get rid of moles?

Trapping. Penn State calls it “the most successful and practical method of controlling moles.” Missouri Extension calls it the most cost-effective and proven method.

Trap type How it works Example brand named by ICWDM
Harpoon Spring-driven spikes drive down into the tunnel Victor
Scissor-jaw Jaws close across the runway Out O’ Sight
Choker loop A loop tightens around the mole Nash
In-tunnel Set inside the runway and hidden Cinch, NoMol

Setting tips from the extension pages:

Safety: These traps close with strong springs and can injure hands. Wear gloves, follow the instructions exactly, and keep children and pets away from set traps. Check traps daily.

Do castor oil repellents work?

The evidence is weak. ICWDM says castor oil products have “shown minor effectiveness.” Missouri Extension says repellents “often fail to provide adequate control.”

If you try one, ICWDM suggests:

Heavy irrigation can wash the product out.

What doesn’t work?

Extension sources rate these as ineffective, unproven or unsafe:

Never pour fuel or chemicals into tunnels.

Rules vary by state and city, and some states restrict body-gripping or spear-type traps. In Pennsylvania, moles are protected nongame mammals but may be controlled when causing damage, per Penn State. Penn State advises checking local rules on allowed traps and toxicants. Ask your state wildlife agency or county extension office before trapping. Follow the label exactly for any pesticide; as ICWDM puts it, “the label is the law.”

Quick answers

What is the fastest way to get rid of moles? Trapping in an active, straight runway. Extension services rate it the most practical method.

Do mole repellents work? Castor oil products show only minor effect in ICWDM’s review. Penn State says no chemical mole repellents are currently registered.

Will killing grubs get rid of moles? Usually not. Moles also eat earthworms, and a grub-free lawn can still have moles.

Do solar vibrating mole stakes work? They have not been proven effective, according to Penn State Extension and ICWDM.

Does chewing gum kill moles? No. ICWDM lists chewing gum among home remedies found ineffective.

How do I know if moles are still active? Press tunnels down and check after 24 hours. Rebuilt tunnels are active.
