How do I get rid of fruit flies in my kitchen?

Short answer: Find and remove what the flies are breeding in: overripe produce, drains, recycling bins, damp mops or rags. Then catch the adults with a jar of cider vinegar plus a drop of dish soap. Their life cycle takes roughly 8 to 10 days, so expect to keep traps out for one to two weeks.

Why do fruit flies keep coming back?

Fruit flies breed fast. University of Kentucky entomologists say a female can lay about 500 eggs. An extension fact sheet adapted from Ohio State puts the upper range at up to 2,000.

The whole cycle is short:

Stage Typical time Source
Egg hatches 24 to 30 hours Ohio State (via Maine.gov)
Larva feeds 5 to 6 days Maryland, Ohio State
New adult ready to breed about 2 days Ohio State (via Maine.gov)
Egg to adult, total 8 to 10 days University of Maryland
Range, depending on temperature 8 to 15 days Ohio State (via Maine.gov)

Kentucky’s fact sheet rounds this to “about a week,” so new flies keep emerging until the source is gone.

Where do fruit flies breed in a kitchen?

The eggs are laid on the surface of fermenting food or liquid. Larvae need moisture and something rotting to eat. The extension sources list these common sites:

How do I find and remove the source?

This is the main fix. Kentucky’s guidance is blunt: all breeding sites must be found and eliminated, and insecticides alone will not solve the problem.

Work through the kitchen in this order:

  1. Produce. Eat, toss, or refrigerate anything ripe. Cut away bruised or damaged spots. Check potato and onion bins for a soft, rotting one.
  2. Recycling and trash. Rinse bottles and cans before they go in the bin. Empty and wash the bin itself.
  3. Mops and rags. Wring mops out well and let them dry fully. Wash damp towels and rags.
  4. Hidden spills. Look under and behind the refrigerator, the stove, and the trash can.
  5. Drains. Test them, as described below, before assuming they are the problem.

How do I know if the flies are coming from my drain?

Use the overnight bag test. Tape a clear plastic food storage bag over the drain opening before bed. Kentucky recommends this for drains and other hard-to-see sites. The Ohio State sheet suggests clear plastic or masking tape over drains and disposals.

If adult flies are trapped in the bag in the morning, that drain is a breeding site. Clean the drain and disposal thoroughly, then repeat the test. If the bag stays empty, look elsewhere.

What is the best homemade fruit fly trap?

The University of Maryland recipe:

  1. Pour some apple cider vinegar into a glass jar.
  2. Add a drop of dish soap. The soap breaks the surface tension, so flies that land sink.
  3. Cover the top with plastic wrap or a small plastic bag and hold it with a rubber band.
  4. Poke a tiny hole so flies can get in but struggle to get out.

Kentucky describes a similar version. Roll paper into a funnel, set it in a jar with a few ounces of cider vinegar, and place it where flies gather. A slice of banana works as extra bait.

Set traps near where you see the most flies. The Ohio State sheet suggests spacing several traps 3 to 4 feet apart. Keep them out for at least one full life cycle, about one to two weeks, after you remove the source.

Should I spray for fruit flies?

Sprays are not the main solution. A spray kills adults in the air but does nothing to larvae in a rotting onion or a drain. New adults will keep emerging.

Kentucky notes that after the source is gone, a pyrethrum-based aerosol can knock down the remaining adults. Follow the label exactly, cover or remove food, dishes and pet bowls first, and ventilate afterward.

How do I keep fruit flies out?

Quick answers

How long does it take to get rid of fruit flies? Usually one to two weeks after you remove the source. Their life cycle runs about 8 to 15 days depending on temperature, so adults may still emerge for a while.

Does apple cider vinegar kill fruit flies? Vinegar attracts them. A drop of dish soap is what makes them sink and drown in the trap.

Can fruit flies live in drains? Yes. Drains and garbage disposals are common breeding sites. Tape a clear plastic bag over the drain overnight to check.

Why do I still have fruit flies after cleaning? A source is probably still there. Check potato and onion bins, recycling, mops, and spills under appliances.
